Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

Collectors of Canadiens material will be intrigued by this years-in-the-making stash, with a collage of colorized images of the 1929-30 Stanley Cup champions, appearing in a complete 24-page issue of La Presse, a heckuva start. Caricatures of the ’31-32 team are on a Winchester Cigarettes tribute page, with Maurice Richard’s picture added by the photographer of his pre-NHL team to a rare postcard-size photo. Gorgeous individual pictures of the Rocket and his ’55-56 teammates are in two tribute yearbook-style publications from College Bourget, with Maurice highlighting two dozen postcards, two of them autographed. A fascinating thick book with dozens of Habs postcard and other images, a 1960 NHL All-Star Game program, a scarce ’59-60 Canadiens media guide, Parade Sportive photos, newspaper caricatures/cut-outs and numerous other items contribute to the appealing ensemble, with further details available on our website.
A thin McCarthy postcard is dedicated to a fan and signed by Richard, with another showing Maurice during his “ambassador” days also signed. A McCarthy with postcard back of the Rocket and a creased Canadiens team-issued affair are joined by autographed Habs postcards of Gendron, MacNeil and JC Tremblay, with portrait jobs of Cournoyer and Watson and two oddball ones of Provost also less-often-seen. The aforementioned thick book with Habs postcard images is mighty cool, with numbers below each picture and “Rack L #24” or “Rack L #47” etc., suggesting a type of order book or a photographer’s/printer’s tool to keep track of negatives, if you follow. The 1960 All-Star Game program, with a Tex Coulter depiction of Doug Harvey on the cover, displays well, with however further inspection revealing light water damage. The scarce magazine-size Press, Radio & Television Guide from ’59-60 is in nice collectible VG+ condition with no major flaws, with a Parade Sportive photo of The Punch Line joined by some 30 individual pictures, one-third of them non-Canadiens. A half-dozen caricatures from the ‘30s, (19) 5” x 7” sepia portraits cut from a newspaper in the late-‘40s, a 1950s’ little booklet picturing Canadiens and originally coming with a “Habs Hockey Shirt” ( a few detached pictures), three Crown Brand photos and a few miscellaneous items complete the older collectibles, with the 1970s and more recent items including cut-outs from TV Hebdo (early-‘70s), four dozen 1990s’ postcards (some duplicates), 60 lineup cards (again, duplication), other magazine caricatures/cut-outs and…a few surprises! Close to 300 items all together. Go Habs Go!
