Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
Infamous for the numerous incidents occurring at their home rink including patrons setting fires due to the lack of heating, lengthy game delays for missing pucks and even fights between opposing players and exiting fans due to the proximity of the visitors dressing room to the entrance, the Long Island Ducks competed in the EHL from 1959 to 1973. While not especially successful on the ice, the franchise can boast player/head-coach John Brophy, the individual believed to have been portrayed by Paul Newman in Slap Shot. This lot contains a collection of 46 blank-banked Ducks 3 ¼” x 5 ½” postcards from circa 1967-68, with what appears to be a complete set of 18, a partial set of 17 (with names handwritten across the front and reverse – not signed by the players) and an extra 11 doubles. There are 2 different cards of Brophy in the apparent complete set, with an additional 4 cards of the tough star (2 of each variation) in the remaining partial set and doubles. Players in the complete set include Les Calder, Benny LeBlanc, Tom Burgess, Butch Morris, Gene Achtymichuk (2, one as player, one as coach), Ray Melnyk, Dwight Winters, Ricky Brown, Ed Lawson, Wayne Doll (2 different), Marty Desmarais and Norm Schmitz, along with a team photo postcard and the two aforementioned Brophy postcards. The majority of the postcards display beautifully with light to moderate wear, with the odd corner ding. Also included, we have a circa 1966 black and white photo of Ducks’ netminder Gordon Dibley (5” x 7” with light wear) and an original mailing envelope with a return address label from Long Island Arena.
