Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
Rarely offered, especially in quantity, international Olympic hockey programs are difficult to locate, with those featuring Canadian and American squads the most highly sought. This lot offers a diverse collection of 11, with specimens present from the 1936 (Germany), 1948 (Switzerland) and 1952 Winter Olympics (Norway). First, we have a trio of programs from the 1936 Games (multiple games were played each day, with a single program issued for each set of matches) including Feb 7 (first round - Canada vs Latvia and USA vs Switzerland), Feb 12 (second round – Canada vs Hungary and USA vs Austria) and Feb 15 (final pool, with Canada vs Czechoslovakia and USA vs Great Britain). This is followed by four programs from the 1948 Games including Feb 1 (2 examples, with Canada vs United Kingdom and USA vs Italy), Feb 3 (Canada vs Italy and USA vs Sweden) and Feb 7 (Canada vs Austria and USA vs United Kingdom). The 1952 Olympic programs total four and include Feb 17 (Canada vs Finland), Feb 20 (Norway vs Finland and Poland vs Germany), Feb 21 (Canada vs Switzerland and USA vs Sweden) and Feb 24 (Canada vs USA… Canada wins gold!). A 12th program issued after the 1936 Games is also included, with this example featuring American and British Empire athletes competing in track events including Jesse Owens. Condition ranges and is pleasing overall, with the 1936 specimens showing just light handling wear, with a few programs exhibiting minor issues including creasing, spine wear and/or rusting to the staples.
