Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

An exceptional piece of Madison Square Garden history is this “Historical Book”, published for a Gala Music Festival Dec. 20, 1925 and almost identical to one for the first hockey game at the building five days earlier between the Americans and Canadiens (also mentioned on the cover here). The stupendous undertaking of “Tex” Rickard comes through in this fascinating 72-page pub measuring 9” by 12”, with Rickard, New York Hockey Club President Colonel J.S. Hammond and John Ringling among the important contributors/executives/officials pictured. The opening page pictures “The New Madison Square Garden” and is joined by “Dedicated to Athletics, Amusements and to Industrial Arts,” along with the name of the original owner. What a trip, 90 years back in time!
The stars of the Premier Music Festival, as well as Director Maurice Frank are also pictured, while pictures of the massive building during construction, of the workers who helped build it and the floor plans for both hockey and boxing events are also intriguing. A good read are the short articles about the past and “new” Madison Square Garden(s), written by famous New York sportswriters. Displaying well and without any unsightly major cover creases/flaws, the book does feature tape repair at the spine to be aware of. Infrequently seen/offered publication awaits its new appreciative home.
