Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2015
A stirring and tempting ensemble of encapsulated little treasures here with these scarce cards featuring various athletes who were prominent in Canada in the 1920s and available in packages of confectionery, notably chocolate bars, manufactured by the Dominion Chocolate Company of Toronto. The bottom part of each card could be cut off and full sets of the little coupons could be redeemed for prizes like a hockey puck, football, baseball glove, hockey stick, etc. The coupons of this set were indeed cut off but in careful fashion, leaving some splendid condition cards. We’ll start with the 11 hockey players, who include Dunc Munro and Ken Doraty. The latter, playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, ended one of the longest games in NHL history with an overtime goal in the sixth OT period in the 1933 semi-finals against Boston. His card has been graded an impressive NM+ 7.5 by SGC, the same as #27-Steve Rice. The card of Munro, who captained Canada to a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics, leads a trio at NM 7, the others being 26-George Clark and 29-Bud Fisher. Other pucksters, all members of the Toronto Millionaires, are 11-Gray at EX+ 5.5, 17-Green and 18-Williams at VG/EX 4, 23-Young at EX/MT 6, 24-Gauthier at VG 3 and 25-Cameron at EX 5. Sprinter and Olympic champion Percy Williams (VG/EX 4) is another prominent athlete, with the rest coming from the world of track & field, golf, boxing, rowing, speed skating and other sports. The condition leader is 15-Philip Granville at NM/MT 8, with two NM+ 7.5s and nine NM 7s, the other most notable. Excellent pieces of Canadiana which hardcore vintage collectors will want to seriously consider are these relics, with further condition details available on our website.
The remainder of the fascinating set is comprised of five cards in EX/MT 6 holders, including sprinting champ Myrtle Cook, a lone EX+ 5.5 representative, a half-dozen at both EX 5 and VG/EX 4, eleven at VG 3 and seven slabbed GOOD 2. There are (18) duplicates; #s 1-10, 14, 20, 22, 38, 39, 42, 49 and 58, with two VG/EX 4s, nine VG 3s and seven at GOOD 2.
