Ah, the Maple Leafs, the team that helped inspire one of the most successful food promotions of all time, is featured here. You see, the St. Lawrence Starch Company, located near Toronto, reportedly hired a photographer to take photos of a few of Toronto’s star players in 1934 (Clancy, Conacher, Jackson, Primeau), with the pictures, along with those of a trio of Montreal Canadiens), to be offered free, in conjunction with the “Bee Hive Sportsviews” radio show on CFRB, hosted by Wes McKnight. You know the rest – proofs of purchase of St. Lawrence products had to be mailed-in in exchange for the photos, with the popularity resulting in players from all NHL teams being photographed and the promotion lasting 33 years! As for the beloved Leafs, some four dozen star here on blue and beige backings, with the picture and mat ensembles generally in nice collectible condition with moderate handling and wear and a minimum of flaws more notable than minor creasing and corner wear. Typically, some of the scarcer examples have aspects to be aware of. The Bud Poile photo has not-too-detracting light creases along the top where it was re-glued to an apparent original backing, while light creasing (photo) and multiple creases (backing) affect the Jack McLean piece. The tough Normie Mann variation (name overlaps stick), however features a beauty crease-free photo and a beige mat with just minor peripheral wear. The more common Mann picture is one of a half-dozen re-affixed to “whiter” obvious replacement mats, the others being Church, Conacher (stuck with tape), Cotton, Day and Parsons, with Chisholm on a suspect blue mat. Other than paper loss on the back of the (warped) Doc Romnes backing and a few original prices on the backs of others, everything else looks good, with Hall-of-Famers Apps, Broda, Clancy, Drillon, Hainsworth, Horner, Jackson, Primeau and Schriner leading the star power and the supporting cast featuring somewhat scarce examples of Carr, Copp, Kendall, Kilrea and Stein. The Leafs and Bee Hive Syrup – a winning combination!
