Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

By all accounts the 1955 Grey Cup game played at Empire Stadium was a splendid affair, unless one was a member or fan of the Alouettes we suppose. A whopping 39,417 spectators jammed the stadium, at that time the largest crowd in the history of Canadian team sports, and which remained a Grey Cup record until 1976. The game had also been exclusively an Ontario-held game with the exception of 1931 when it was played in Montreal, so the 1955 event in Vancouver was a big-time affair. We have 3 felt pennants from this ’55 contest that saw the Edmonton Eskimos defeat the Montreal Alouettes 34-19, with all 3 measuring 26 1/2 “ long and all retaining their tassles. The 3 also show an illustrated overview of Empire Stadium with the Grey Cup and are worded as “Grey Cup Game Empire Stadium 1955, with a green example showing “Edmonton Eskimos” in yellow lettering, while a red one reads as “Montreal Alouettes” in white, and the 3rd as “Vancouver, B.C.” in grey. A truly cool threesome of Grey Cup souvenir pennants from nearly 60 years ago, in great condition with the white areas now showing darker, and with small pin holes in the 3 corners of each.
