Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

What a great read this is. Denis Brodeur’s personal scrapbook from the days he tended goal during his 1950s senior minor league career that saw him stopping pucks in places such as the NOHL North Bay Trappers, the EHL Charlotte Clippers, and the OHA Senior Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen when he and the boys took on teams like the Owen Sound Mercurys and Soo Greyhounds, and even an exhibition game against the Detroit Red Wings. Brodeur and the Dutchmen also represented Canada at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina, Italy when the team brought home the bronze medal, and their exploits on the big stage are included here. Measuring a large 18” x 24”, this 70-page personal scrapbook, from the man who not only went on to become a legendary hockey photographer but also fathered future HOFer Martin Brodeur, is jampacked with newspaper clippings that feature Denis and his teammates on various teams during his solid senior and minor pro years. The pages are loose but remarkably, the clippings have been nicely preserved, and found among the many clippings are various programs glued in from the Dutchmen in Ontario League action, plus various publications including the Dutchmen vs. the RCAF Flyers, an IIHF Official Rule Book, and Cortina Olympics program and map books. Also in browsing through, we see a 1954 typed sheet from the Windsor Bulldogs stating that they agree to pay Denis Brodeur $100 per week plus room and board for his services for the 1954-55 season and signed in ballpoint pen by GM Murph Chamberlain, who had been a tough forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Bruins, and Montreal Canadiens during the 1930s and ‘40s. Just a great scrapbook, and heartwarming to read the articles detailing the reception the Dutchmen received back home after their efforts at the Olympics.
