This precious and historic silver medal from the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz stands as testimony to an amazing performance by the Czechoslovakian hockey team. The Czechoslovakian Olympic team went undefeated in eight games during the round-robin tournament in Switzerland with seven wins and a scoreless draw against Canada, which finished with an identical record. Czechoslovakia settled for the silver medal, the only medal won by the country in St. Moritz, by virtue of its lower goal average of 4.44, based on outscoring its opponents 80-18 during the tournament, compared to Canada's average of 13.8 based on a 69-5 advantage over its opponents in goals scored divided by goals allowed. This 1948 Olympic silver medal for ice hockey comes from the family of a Czechoslovakian player who wish to remain anonymous. It measures a shade over 2 1/4" in diameter with "Vmes Jeux Olympiques D'Hiver St Moritz 1948" between two snowflakes on the obverse, which has Swiss manufacturer "Huguenin" stamped on the bottom, and an "H" hallmark that looks like the Roman numeral II below that on the edge. The reverse displays a hand holding aloft a lit torch in relief over the Olympic rings with the Olympic motto, "Citius Altius Fortius" in Latin arched along the top edge and six snowflakes. The top edge, just above the torch, has a small dent and the medal is very nicely preserved with a bit of tarnish, mostly towards the sides. Comes in a vintage presentation box, though it is not known whether or not this is the Olympic medal's original box. An amazing piece of Olympic hockey history.
