He was labelled a "can't miss kid" from the time he was 14 years old, and Terry Sawchuk lived up to all expectations and much more in a big-league career that would begin in early 1950 as a Detroit Red Wing and finish two decades later, after wearing the colors of the New York Rangers. He'd done it all – the Calder Trophy in 1951 as the year's best rookie, a perennial all-star, a four-time Vezina Trophy winner, and a four-time Stanley Cup champ. And although Sawchuk would pass away prematurely in 1970, the awards kept coming, with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1971 and his iconic Red Wings sweater sent to the rafters of the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit in 1994. A legendary goaltender who, although he shared netminding duties in Toronto when the Leafs won the Stanley Cup in 1967, would see his greatest triumphs while wearing the red and white of the Detroit Red Wings. Classic Auctions is more than proud to offer Terry Sawchuk's game-worn Red Wings sweater from his 1957-58 campaign, a year that saw him suit up for all 70 games of the season, posting a 2.94 GAA and .907 save percentage. This classic Sawchuk gamer has been preserved in wonderful condition, showing 4 team repairs on the left sleeve and 3 more on the back, with marks that line the edge of the classic "winged wheel" team crest, which has some puckering, as does the back number "1". Sewn on the inside hem is a tag that reads "Lippman's Detroit" along with what possibly is the size number "44", and when we measure it, we see it reaches 21" from front collar to hem, and 20" from underarm to underarm due to light shrinking. We are also tremendously pleased to have photo-matched this incredible sweater from a November 6th, 1957 game between Detroit and Montreal, with the following specifics which will be photographically detailed on our website; the left sleeve, where the particular spacing of the elbow's red sewing thread in correlation to the red section of the jersey above it, and the 1 on the sleeve which is positioned at a light angle. The right sleeve shows particular spacing of the elbow's red sewing thread in correlation to the red section of the jersey above it, while on the left hem (tagging side), the unaligned sewing on the hem and in the red section of the sweater with the white threads showing. The team crest on Sawchuk's gamer is also photo-matched to a February 15th 1958 game at Maple Leaf Gardens which will also be photographically detailed on our website. What an opportunity to own a nicely-preserved game-worn, photo-matched Original Six sweater from one of the greatest goaltenders of all time. Hall of Fame-worthy is an understatement.
