Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
Long thought to have been issued during the 1923-24 hockey season, these Paulin’s Candy cards were issued with the Winnipeg company’s Hockey Bar over a two-year period, beginning a year later than originally thought. A complete 70-card set could be redeemed for either a hockey stick or a box of chocolates, with the cards being sent back with either a punch hole or, like these two, with the company’s “Received” stamp on the back, thus making for a possibility of three different versions. Card #65 here features Bobby Benson, while #66 pictures Ernie Anderson, with both having been slabbed VG-EX 4 by PSA. Low population numbers on Paulin’s cards across the board, with the PSA Population Report indicating a total of just (19) Benson cards submitted over the years and (23) Anderson examples. Of the 8 encapsulated Benson cards with the redemption stamp, this VG-EX 4 is bettered by only one, with the Anderson holding the same second place status, and that out of 6 submissions with the stamp.
