Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/25/2014
The renegade WHA held their first All-Star game on January 6, 1973 at the Colisee in Quebec City, with the Eastern Division coming out on top of the West by a score of 6-2 and with Wayne Carlton of the Ottawa Nationals chosen Game MVP. We’ve got a commemorative pewter mug from this first affair, standing 5” tall, engraved on the side as “World Hockey Association, First All-Star Game, Quebec City, January 6, 1973”. This old mug with the glass bottom has numerous scratches lining it, has nicks scattered about, and isn’t quite as shiny as it once was, but it remains a lovely mug longing to be displayed or filled with suds, and it marks a truly important occasion, the first of 7 All-Star games the WHA would hold before the league would fold and from its ashes, Edmonton, New England, Quebec and Winnipeg would carry on as new franchises in the NHL.
