Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Awesome 1971-72 Pittsburgh Penguins #17 gamer with a garter-style fight strap was worn by veteran forward Ron Schock. There is solid interior pilling, particularly on the shoulders, and we count a baker's dozen team repairs, including groupings on the right elbow and right tail, some material-backed. Wilson size 46 tagging remains in the back of the tie-neck, which does not have its original lace. Most of the home white jerseys from this set were passed down to the Junior Penguins. Their crests were removed at some point, as is the case on this one. A Penguins team crest from that set of jerseys was sewn back on back in the day, rough and kind of crudely, and all repairs around it are not Pens repairs but repairs made when the Penguins crest original to this gamer was stripped off. In his third of eight seasons in Pittsburgh, Schock finished fourth in team scoring in 1971-72 with 46 points, trailing only Syl Apps, who led the Penguins with 59, Jean Pronovost (53) and Greg Polis (49).
The Penguins switched to the triangle Skating Penguin crest midway through 1971-72 season and there is evidence of a former round team crest on the jersey. The previous season, the Penguins began wearing nameplates on their jerseys for all home games, not just televised games on CBS, and there is evidence of a removed short nameplate.
More game wear includes reddish-brown stains on the left sleeve and front. The Wilson tagging retains its original stitching along the bottom edge while the top and sides have let go. This gamer was most likely displayed in a frame as evidenced by the 15-20 pin tack holes.
