Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

Maurice Richard had just become the captain of the Montreal Canadiens when he signed this NHL contract for the 1956-57 season. A great piece of hockey history, the Rocket's standard player's contract calling for a straight salary of $12,000 with no bonus clauses indicated is also signed by fellow deceased HOFers William Northey, on behalf of the Canadiens, and league president Clarence Campbell. Richard had just led the Habs to the first Stanley Cup in what would prove to be a record run of five straight titles, each of the last four with the Rocket receiving the Cup from Campbell as team captain. He scored 33 goals for his ninth and final 30-goal season which brought him to the cusp of becoming the NHL's charter member of the 500-goal club. Richard has signed below Northey, both in bold blue ballpoint, at the bottom of the contract which has been wonderfully preserved with one crisp fold crease. Campbell has signed in fountain pen on the front, which bears the NHL Central Registry date stamp.
