Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2014

The 1982-83 New York Islanders' march to the Stanley Cup is now a part of hockey lore. The Islanders, already with three Stanley Cups under their belt, were matched against the young and upcoming Edmonton Oilers led by Wayne Gretzky and company, but the warriors from Long Island swept the talented but youthful Oilers squad in four straight games to capture their fourth straight Stanley Cup, something the Montreal Canadiens had just finished accomplishing prior to the Islanders' feat. And as history has recorded, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier admitted later that they were impressed by walking by the Islanders dressing room after the fourth and final game and instead of seeing the Islanders players celebrating, they saw them nursing wounds and using ice bags instead. Gretzky and Messier saw the sacrifice needed for a winning squad, and in the years to come, the Oilers would heed this message and create their own dynasty. Offered is the silver-plated 13-inch Stanley Cup presented to Islanders star Butch Goring after this historic fourth Cup-win for his team. With green felt under the black wood base, this treasured Cup is in wonderful condition, with light tarnishing throughout and with almost no scratching or scuffing. The trophy comes with its original blue cotton carrying bag and an LOA from Mr. Goring. All in all, this gem is an important and wonderful keepsake from the glory years of Goring and his powerhouse Islanders squad.
