Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012

The late Gary Carter and the Montreal Expos came of age together in the late-1970s. The Hall of Fame catcher's signed 1979 Expos game-worn jersey conjures up great memories of HOF skipper Dick Williams' talented young squad featuring ace Steve Rogers, five-tool right fielder Ellis Valentine and Carter's fellow HOFer, Andre Dawson. Gary, who tagged out California's Brian Downing at the plate in the 1979 All-Star Game to finish off an unforgettable throw home by Pittsburgh's Dave Parker, hit .283 with 22 homers and 75 RBIs as the Expos battled the Pirates right down to the wire before coming up just short. A gorgeous blue marker Carter autograph sits in the back of this gamer's neck below the Rawlings size 42 tagging. "Set 2 1979" flag tag is sewn inside the left front tail. Gary's retired number "8" is sewn on the right breast in red twill. The blue twill "8" sewn on the back has broken anchor stitching on the bottom right outer edge and some of the stitching has let go on the triple twill Expos crest on the left breast. Surname letters are sewn directly onto the jersey, which had a now-removed nameplate added when it was subsequently used by one of the Expos' minor league teams. Nicely preserved overall with reddish stains on the back. Comes with a Sothebys LOA.
