Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012

Sixteen baseball Hall-of-Famers contributed to this marvellous lot, with Dodger shortstop great Pee Wee Reese and Pirate slugger Ralph Kiner each autographing five pieces. Reese beautifully signed a Perez-Steele Great Moments oversized card, two 8 by 10s, an index card and an 8 by 10 HOF Induction Day piece also signed by fellow inductees Drysdale, Aparicio, Killebrew and Ferrell. Kiner sigs appear on a vintage postcard (tape), magazine photo, 1970s TCMA postcard, two-page advertising agreement and handwritten note ("Ralph"). Similar TCMA postcards are nicely autographed by Carl Hubbell, Max Carey, George Kelly, "Chas" Gehringer, Enos Slaughter, Billy Herman and Earl Averill (To Mort), with JD McCarthy postcards featuring the sigs of Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter and Leo Durocher (personalized, weak). Still other intriguing items to tell you about on our website. A killer one-page 1971 framed letter signed by Max Carey thanks Florida Governor Reubin Askew for an invitation to a baseball dinner in St. Petersburg and relates how Carey arrived in Miami Beach in 1920 “when there were no causeways and only 500 residents. Yep – been here ever since.” An original 1933 photo of Carey as manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers is matted and framed along with one of his “Manager – Brooklyn National League Baseball Club” business cards, with an LOA revealing the display was part of Carey’s personal collection. A Western Union Telefax was sent by Ralph Kiner to Hank Greenberg of the White Sox in September, 1959 and reads: “Doby paid $1600.03 through August 24, 1959. Regards.” Finally, two 1950s minor league contracts are signed by PCL San Diego players Ellis Kinder (1957) and Dee Fondy (1959), with league president Leslie O’Connor signing each. There you have it – another appealing group of items handled and autographed by baseball’s honoured members – sweet!
