Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
The mystery of who baseball legend and American icon George Herman "Babe" Ruth paid with this personal cheque will never be solved but admiring his penmanship while contemplating his accomplishments on the baseball diamond and his place in the history of the world soon has one forgetting that question. The new owner of this thought-provoking piece will not only get one but two "GH Ruth" signatures, with the Babe signing the front and also endorsing the back. With "BABE RUTH" at the far left and made out to "Cash" for 50 dollars, the Chemical Bank & Trust Company cheque is dated June 6, 1937. Neither the bank stamps nor the punches affect the signatures in any way. The lower right corner of the cheque is missing, having taken with it the very end of the "h" in "Ruth" on the front. Very minor rubbing on the "H" in "GH" on the front is to mention. Otherwise the sigs are in difficult-to-hope-for-nicer condition. Matted and framed to approximately 14" square with a blow-up of Ruth's Goudey baseball card, the display is clear on both sides so that both signatures may be viewed. An LOA from James Spence Authentication will accompany this riveting eye-candy. Please note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
