Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
The 1926 Stanley Cup Finals saw the NHL champion Montreal Maroons matched against the Western Hockey League champion Victoria Cougars, who had won the Cup the previous year; defeating the Montreal Canadiens. This series was historic on several fronts, as it was the first appearance in the Cup Final by the Maroons, and the last time a non-NHL team would challenge for the Stanley Cup - the WHL folded following these Finals, leaving the Cup to be contested solely by NHL clubs thereafter. Offered here is a complete program from Game One of the series, March 30, 1926 - the first Stanley Cup Final game ever played at the legendary Montreal Forum! In this contest Maroons star Nels Stewart, the NHL's top scorer during the regular season, was shifted back to defense and scored two goals in leading his team to a 3-0 victory. Clint Benedict earned the shutout, and future HOF'er Babe Seibert broke his leg in a collision. The Maroons would go on to win their first Stanley Cup in four games. The program is complete and in solid VG+ condition - an extremely rare and historic touchstone to the NHL's first decade.
