Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012

A clash of two Stanley Cup dynasties was the subtext of the 2003 Heritage Classic in Edmonton. The NHL’s first outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium pitted the Oilers against the Montreal Canadiens. Leading up to the modern teams taking to the ice to play an official NHL regular season game, the huge crowd of 57,167 was warmed in the bone-chilling conditions by the MegaStars Game. This fantasy come to life pitted Gretzky and Co.’s 1980s Oilers Cup dynasty against a Canadiens Old Timers lineup laden with members of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Among them was legendary defenseman Guy Lapointe, who has signed his Habs practice-worn jersey from the Canadiens Old Timers’ skate on November 21. This historic jersey is the only one worn by Lapointe during the outdoor practice held the day before the big event. Guy, who won six Stanley Cups, has signed in black marker on the red airknit fabric within the upper part of the “5” sewn on the back in white and blue double-twill. “Lapointe” is spelled out in white twill letters sewn on a nameplate. The famous CH crest is sewn on the front along with an NHL Center Ice patch on the right breast and “CCM” and size “58” patches on the left front tail. A size 58 flag tag sits in the back of the neck. A MeiGray registry patch is sewn onto the inner rear hem. Its number corresponds to MeiGray LOA that accompanies this historic MegaStars Game practice-worn jersey signed by Habs great Guy Lapointe.
