Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
Cardboard hoard here begins with three O-Pee-Chee sets from the mid-1970s, starting with, at first look, an overall VG ensemble from the company’s rookie card-laden 1974-75 issue. We spot a crease in all of the most important RCs, with the exception of the EX (OC) Don Cherry. Intermittent pen marks on the right edge of many cards however further lowers the condition, although only the Bowman card is affected among the key RCs. Similar pen marks are on the left edge of some of the cards in the ’75-76 set, with however Orr and Dryden (both EX) not being affected. The rest range from VG to EX with marked checklists, (like the previous set), and half the team checklists marked. The same pen phenomenon affects a similar-condition ’76-77 set, including the otherwise VG+ Orr and Dryden, but not the EX (OC) Trottier RC. Completing the set portion of the collection is a nice NM-or-better ’87-88 OPC opened factory set with Robitaille and Oates RCs, while a similar factory set is without the two key RCs, as well as Gretzky, Lemieux and Roy. Most notable in a small stack of rookie cards are three ’80-81 Mark Messiers (EX, with one OC), an ’80-81 Ray Bourque (VG), Paul Coffey (EX) and Jari Kurri (NM-MT OC) from ’81-82 and a VG+ ’84-85 Steve Yzerman. Trottier, Gartner, D. Savard, Stastny, Anderson and Ciccarelli RCs are also present, but nothing destined for the professional graders; all have minor flaws. A classic OPC card locker contains ’81-82 cards in their appropriate team sections, with mostly off-centered but otherwise sharp cards of Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Moog and Anderson among the Oilers and possibly a few pleasant surprises elsewhere. Checklist highlights include an unmarked, otherwise VG #34 from ’69-70, with a #121 from ’65-66 Topps off-centered and with evidence of pencil “checks” erased, but still presentable. A #66 from ’67-68 Topps has one check on the front and scribbling on the back in pen. Miscellaneous unmarked checklists from ’73-74 to ‘88-89 total over 75, with some duplication. Completing are (53) low grade ’66-67 Topps cards, short on star power and with glue/notebook paper damage on the backs, along with 20 miscellaneous OPC four-card box bottoms from the late-1980s.
