Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
An instant collection or nice dealer lot is offered with this 13-year run of sets, minus the Wayne Gretzky rookie year, with most everything from the 1980s generally showing very little handling/wear. With any big stash there are exceptions, with details available on our website. A near set (129/132) of 1976-77 WHA cards (VG-EX average) and three different complete sets from '77-78 lead things off; a 396-card O-Pee-Chee ensemble is in the VG to EX range, its Topps counterpart is a sharp NM, while a 66-card WHA set features mostly EX-MT or better cards. The Mike Bossy rookie year and a nice '80s run includes numerous Hall-of-Famer RCs and Gretzky cards, with condition details online. Unless noted, sets are complete and generally feature EX-MT and NM-or-better cards, with unmarked checklists and unmarked team checklists. A `78-79 Topps set accompanies an O-Pee-Chee set, with the OPC Bossy RC at EX-MT (OC) and a couple of very small subtle ripples affecting the otherwise NM Topps Bossy rookie. The Gretzky second year (`80-81) and Gretz All-Star are perfectly centered and NM-MT, with Gartner RC (NM), Bourque RC (EX-MT OC) and Messier RC (EX-MT) also notable. There are two sets of `81-82 OPC, with however the second set not as nice, and centering issues to mention in the better set, notably Gretzky, Kurri RC and #1-Bourque, along with an otherwise NM Coffey RC. An `81-82 Topps set is the East (132-card) version and real sharp. The collection is housed in binders, with upright storage affecting the bottom row of cards in the `82-83 set, with Gretzky creased, but Francis RC a nice NM, Hawerchuk RC NM (OC) and Fuhr RC EX-MT. Two problem-free `83-84 sets are followed by a complete job from `84-85 and a another group missing five important rookies. From the complete set we see Yzerman and Neely rookies at NM, Chelios a tad better and Gilmour and Lafontaine no better than EX. There’s also an ’84-85 Topps set with a NM-MT Yzerman rookie. The Mario Lemieux rookie year is a little off but Mario comes in at NM and MacInnis RC is NM-MT. Both the second year Marios from OPC and Topps sets appear NM-MT or very close to it, with the OPC Roy RC at EX-MT and the Topps version NM. The key cards in two `87-88 OPC sets, `88-89 OPC and Topps sets and an `89-90 Topps near set (missing Gretzky and Gretz sticker in the sticker insert set) include generally good centering and NM-or-better grades. We don`t believe there are any Gem Mint 10s among the key cards in this collection, but if offers numerous possibilities.
