Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
Years in the making and hours to sift through and summarize, this terrific Bee Hive photo collection is one of the more interesting groups we've handled over the years. Group 1 and 2 photos with cream-colored backings are housed in binders not by era or by team but alphabetically and mixed together, with blue and red-backed Group 1s alphabetically in another! We've however pulled all the scarcer, more valuable/desirable ones and organized them to tell you the following story! Leading the way are a trio of Montreal Canadiens, with Howie Morenz featuring a perfect picture and a feint crease in the upper right corner of the backing. The original blue backing beneath Maurice Richard's picture is brighter than the showing "border", confirming its originality, with the ensemble in strong EX condition. Earl Robinson's photo is problem free but there is moisture damage in the left border region. Exactly four dozen other important Group 1 photos quickly bring the value of this hoard up into the thousands and unless noted, are in nice collectible VG-EX, EX and EX+ condition. Included are Bruins Gallinger, Jack Schmidt and Shore, Chicago's Papike, Red Wings Connie Brown, Jennings, Keating, McCaig, both McDonald variations, McReavy and Voss, Maroons Carson, MacKenzie, Runge and Trottier, Canadiens Bibeault (VG), Dame, Lamoureux, O'Connor, Terry Reardon, Sands, Singbush and Trudel, NY Americans Emms (minor back damage), Jerwa, Klein, Lamb, Shields, Slobodian, Thurier and Wycherly, Rangers Kirk (VG) and Henry vertical (VG), Maple Leafs Boothman, Carr, Forsey, Goldham, Hill (indentations at the corners from a photo album) and Stewart (white uniform). Trophies dated on the back are the Allan Cup (G), Calder (creases in the photo itself and partially detached), Hart (VG), Memorial Cup (VG) and Vezina, with the Byng Trophy not dated but with glue spots on the back of the photo. Announcers Foster Hewitt and Wes McKnight (glued also at the bottom) are also present. Condition-wise the Group 1s are rather impressive in that there are no low grade "dogs" as is often the case with the earlier photos. Now then, we spot 27 Group 1 photos and 30 Group 2s that are glued onto obvious repro/replacement backings, (not quite of the same color),including some scarce ones, with the photos themselves nice, nice. Included are Chicago's Brydson, Maroons Connell, Canadiens Young, Americans O'Flaherty and Watson, Rangers Burns, Garret and Kirkpatrick and Leafs Dickens, McCreedy, McLean and Poile, along with a dated Allan Cup. As for the group of Group 2 photos, a horizontal shot of Terry Sawchuk with the Bruins and with a black-scripted name will intrigue many, with a somewhat suspect, not quite the same color backing, to mention. Looking all original are Bruins Babando, Yank Boyd, "Johnny" Peirson and Regan, Chicago's Lunde, Red Wings Bucyk, Enio (VG), Hall (G), L. Hillman and Quackenbush (VG), Canadiens Berenson (black script), Dube, Hodge (white script), Hanna (light scratches in the photo) and Robertson, Rangers Max Bentley (photo affixed crookedly), Glover (VG), LaBossiere and "John" Ratelle, Maple Leafs Barry Cullen error (photo pictures Brian), Flaman, McCormick (VG), Reid (G) and Solinger, with trophies present being the Art Ross, Norris (VG) and Prince of Wales. Notables glued to newer backs are Bruins Creighton, Reibel, Black Hawks Conn and Hull (#16), Red Wings Howe (away jersey) and Peters, Canadiens Couture and Leafs Pete Conacher and Nykoluk. A handful (7) of Group 2s are glued on red backings. The first two groups total a whopping 500+, with 136 Group 3 "Woodgrains" not too strong on "toughies" but including Bruins Gendron and Stapleton, Maurice Richard and all eight trophies. Corner condition of the latter group is fine but many exhibit slight warping from storage. All-in-all though, this collection is bound to please its new owner, be it someone keen on acquiring an instant collection or an entrepreneurial dealer/hobbyist. Good luck with this formidable booty and please call if more information is required on this lot which may be subject to a silent reserve.
