Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012

With a wonderful purplish tint to them and the only such set on the PSA Set Registry, these scarce "All-Time Finest" encapsulated darlings feature senior hockey players who were cheered in the lower St. Lawrence River region towns of Mont-Joli, Riviere-du-Loup, Rimouski and Matane, Quebec. Notables in the set are goaltender Denis Brodeur, father of New Jersey Devils' legend Martin Brodeur, goalie Marcel Paille, whose over 20 years in pro hockey included time with the New York Rangers, and Gerry Plamondon, a top senior hockey scorer after winning the Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1945-46. Our calculations reveal that individually, all but two of these cards are either the highest ever graded by PSA or, in the case of nine of them, are in a first place tie. They combine for a weighted GPA of 5.40. With highest marks is card #15 of Mont-Joli's Gerard Lachance at NM-MT 8, followed by two at NM+ 7.5; 36-Frank Cote and 45-Floyd Crawford. Seven received NM 7 recognition including the #50 Plamondon example. One EX-MT+ 6.5 edges out (13) EX-MT 6s and one six with a (MK) qualifier, with eight at EX+ 5.5 and 51-Paille and 65-Desrosiers among (16) at EX 5. Completing the booty are five VG-EX+ 4.5 cards and (11) VG-EX 4s. The latter group includes the #17 Brodeur card which exhibits two light stains. Yet another stupendous offering from a Hall of Fame collection, this tantalizing ensemble may be subject to a silent reserve.
