Another superb opportunity which will interest a cross-section of hobbyists, this wondrous old wool brings forth the story of how it was at the CAHA summer meetings in Toronto in June of 1962 that Father David Bauer proposed the idea of Canada's top university and Senior A players playing for numerous months together in preparation for international events like the Olympics and World Championships. The CAHA "went for it" and in September of 1963 Canada's first national team program began when young men enrolled at the University of British Columbia, with their sights set on the 1964 Winter Olympic Games, to be held in Innsbruck, Austria. One of them was winger Terry Clancy, son of Hall-of-Famer King Clancy. Forty-three exhibition games, in Canada and in Europe, preceded Team Canada's arrival in Innsbruck. Backed by inspiring goaltender Seth Martin, Canada shut out Switzerland 8-0, beat Sweden 3-1, defeated Germany 4-2, outscored the United States 8-6 and took Finland 6-2, with Clancy scoring his lone tournament goal in that victory. The young men were up 1-0 against Czechoslovakia before a third-period injury forced Martin from the game, the Czechs rallying to win 3-1. A 3-2 loss to the Soviets resulted in Canada finishing a disappointing fourth after a controversial rule change.
Obviously, hearts were bleeding, with obvious bleeding to this classic tie-neck style sweater. Some nice black sticks marks are on the front though, along with an awesome sewn-on, now-puckered "Canada" crest. A similar smaller crest is on the left sleeve, where a looney-size team repair appears. A two-inch hole is just above, with a series of stitch-jobs and holes down by the left cuff and a very similar scenario on the right sleeve, where we count a total of five repairs. A two-inch hole went unrepaired near the lower right hem, with four nickel-size repairs on the back joined by a dozen holes of varying sizes. Clancy's number "16" on the back is a thick cotton, canvas-like material, with two shriveled-up tags in the inner left hem; a silver-on-black one that reads "Sparlings Sporting Goods - Vancouver, B.C." and a smaller one reading "Dry Clean With Care." Smaller than its partner, this one measures out to approximately size 40. From an important international event and destined for a Hall of Fame-caliber collection, the formidable piece will come with Terry Clancy's signed letter of authenticity.
