The 2009 NHL entry draft had a clear-cut No. 1 pick in John Tavares though the prospects who immediately followed the OHL scoring star were extremely tempting as well. Tavares went first overall to the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay was delighted to claim hulking Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman next at No. 2. Colorado felt it couldn’t lose with Matt Duchene at No. 3, especially in the wake of speculation that the Islanders gave strong consideration to taking him first overall. Evander Kane was selected at No. 4 by the ill-fated Atlanta Thrashers, and Brayden Schenn was chosen with the No. 5 pick by the L.A. Kings. All five of the top picks in the 2009 NHL draft at Montreal’s Bell Centre have signed this Reebok stick in silver paint pen along with Nazem Kadri, Toronto’s first pick overall at No. 7. Tavares’ autograph has a light smudge high on the front of the shaft of this Reebok “P. Datsyuk” store model stick. Big, bold Hedman, Duchene and Kane autographs across the blade. The Schenn and Kadri autographs on the shaft have very light smudges/marks.
