Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012

Gone but certainly not forgotten, the NHL’s original Bay Area team went by a variety of names, beginning with the California Seals when they joined the league in the 1967 expansion. Carol Vadnais was one of the ill-fated franchise’s few bright spots. The all-star defenceman signed a pair of items offered here, including his team-signed Sher-Wood game-used stick with 18 autographs from members of the 1969-70 Oakland Seals, as well as his cover photo on a California Golden Seals game program from a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins in December 1971. “Vadnais 5” is stamped on the shaft of Carol’s team-signed gamer, which retains his white tape knob and narrow black tape job on the blade. The shaft is covered with the vintage black marker signatures of the likes of Featherstone, Croteau, Hextall, Stackhouse, Muloin, Ferguson, Ehman, Smith, Ingarfield, O’Donoghue, Hampson, Roberts, Hicke, Worthy, Vadnais and Jarrett. Bottom of the stick blade shows some wear with light cracks on the heel of this otherwise solid gamer which exhibits nice game use in the form of black marks. Carol’s vintage black marker autograph sits on the cover of the full program from the Seals’ 4-2 win over the Bruins on December 12, 1971. The program’s original owner was a season ticket holder who personally obtained Carol’s autograph and scored the game, taping newspaper clippings from the game and his ticket stub inside the program. Both signed pieces come with individual LOAs.
