Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
As the benefactor of hockey's most prized championship trophy, Lord Stanley is a must for any autograph collection. The ornate silver bowl that would come to bear his name was purchased by Frederick Arthur Stanley in London for the price of 10 guineas. Although Lord Stanley, who subsequently became the Earl of Derby, never witnessed a championship game, his Cup has since become the symbol of hockey supremacy. Offered is an Earl of Derby signed letter dated November 5, 1900 and handwritten on the former Governor General of Canada's Knowsley, Prescot letterhead. Having died in 1908, Lord Stanley's autograph is usually absent from even the most complete of Hall of Fame signature collections. The two-page letter of thanks addressed to "My dear Pembroke" has been written and elegantly signed "Derby" in black fountain pen ink on the front of two leaves created by a vertical fold. There is a horizontal crease through the middle and a lighter one along the top. A PSA/DNA sticker has been placed on the bottom right corner of the front page of the letter's blank rear leaf.
