Incredible signed Wayne Gretzky 1996-97 New York Rangers game-worn helmet is photo-matched and it comes with a solid provenance story. The Great One signed in bold gold paint pen right on top of his distinctive Jofa helmet, which was originally obtained from Wayne's brother-in-law, Gary Jones, the brother of Wayne's wife, Janet. Two letters of provenance and a MeiGray certificate of registration accompany this Rangers helmet from Gretzky's first season with the Blueshirts. Two crescent-shaped scratch marks above the "NYR" decal on the right side of the helmet are matched to action photos of Wayne wearing this blue lid. The "NYR" stickers on the sides of this game-worn helmet with chinstrap were applied over other stickers, which are visible on the edges. Wayne's felt insert remains in place at the back of the intact inner padding of this crack-free helmet, which shows plenty of game wear in the form of scratch marks and scuffs. There is a small smudge in the "W" of Wayne's autograph and a few nicks to the gold paint pen signature, which remains essentially whole. A fantastic photo-matched and autographed game-worn piece from the Great One's Broadway debut!
