Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
A fantastic look into the history of the Chicago Black Hawks, the players who wrote it and the numerous uniforms and crest styles they donned, is offered in this fascinating collection, led by a real photo affair from 1930-31 when coach Dick Irvin's squad lost in the Stanley Cup finals to Howie Morenz's Canadiens. Three pinholes across the top and a quarter-inch tear render it VG but no unsightly creases to report. Five classic Nestor Johnson photos on paper stock from the 1930s are EX-or-better, with Morenz front and centre in a gorgeous NM '35-36 colour job. A complete run from 1939-40 to 1968-69 features the likes of the Bentleys, Mosienko, Gadsby, Brimsek, Lumley, Hall, Hull, Mikita, Pilote and others, with black and white giving way to striking colors for the last half-dozen. Condition varies, with further details below. From the 1930s and not previously mentioned are team pics from 1931-32, (real photo and F-G with holes/wear in the upper border and featuring a great shot of a smiling Chuck Gardiner), 1933-34 (Poor) and ’33-34 CCM (trimmed), with the aforementioned group of five including 1933-34, the 1935-36 with Morenz, 1936-37 and both colour and black and white versions from 1937-38, the latter noting the Black Hawks' Stanley Cup title and featuring a stove pipe-like image of Lord Stanley’s trophy. A light not-very-detracting ripple or light crease in the pics from the early 1940s, with a “Members of the Black Hawks Now in the Armed Forces” photo on paper stock picturing nine including Mosienko. Generally nice collectible condition throughout the rest, with a few exceptions featuring minor tape repair on the back but also several near mint examples. Water damage affects 1959-60, with the last six colour pictures mostly in tiptop shape (1965-66 has a light crease and pinholes at the corners), with the back of 1967-68 autographed by Dave Dryden. All in all, a fantastic ensemble.
