Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
We never tire of recounting hockey history and of passing along significantly historical pieces of hockey memorabilia to those who covet, cherish and appreciate them, with this classic Spalding puck offering us another such opportunity. It was with this very puck that Harold "Mush" March enabled the Chicago Black Hawks to drink from Lord Stanley's precious bowl for the very first time in franchise history! Saskatchewan-born March was a diminutive right winger who spent his entire 17-year NHL career toiling for the Black Hawks, but who had potted just four goals in the 1933-34 campaign before scoring, not one, but two, important playoff goals that spring. The first came in overtime and eliminated Chicago's opening-round opponents, the Montreal Canadiens. After taking care of the Montreal Maroons in the semis, the Black Hawks faced the Red Wings, claiming the Stanley Cup with a three-games-to-one victory. The clincher was a thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory at Chicago Stadium, with March firing this puck past Detroit goaltender Wilf Cude after 30:05 of extra play; a quick shot following a face-off win by centre Doc Romnes in Red Wings territory. March rushed to the net to retrieve the puck himself and was then grabbed by his teammates who gave him the hero treatment, carting him around the ice on their shoulders. With a knack for scoring historic goals, March had scored the first goal when the Chicago Stadium opened in 1929 and also the first goal in the history of Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens in 1931.
This cup-winning goal puck exhibits game use in the form of half a dozen small nicks/chips in the edge and is affixed to a 6" by 8" wooden plaque, the engraving below the puck reading "Winning Puck - Stanley Cup - 1934 - Mush March." A handwritten letter of provenance signed by Mush March's son will be included with this one-of-a-kind museum-worthy piece, one of the most significant in the long history of the Chicago Black Hawks and the earliest known Stanley Cup-winning goal puck. Truly stirring!
