Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
Substantial stained wood and bronze plaque (12" x 15") presented to broadcaster Rene Lecavalier to commemorate his induction into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. Brass plate below proclaims: "Rene Lecavalier, Broadcasting, Inducted October 27, 1994." In near mint condition. Also included is the classic blue sports jacket by Cambridge with the intricately-embroidered filigree Canada Sports Hall of Fame crest on the breast pocket boasting "Honoured Member". This is the jacket worn by Lecavalier on the night of his induction. Rene was a huge name in French-language sporting circles and is a past-recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. On several occasions, Lecavalier won the Radiomonde Trophy, awarded to radio’s most popular broadcaster. Then came television and the start of a new career for René, a sports career this time. As the first commentator for the French language versison of “Hockey Night in Canada,” he quickly became so famous that he could hardly walk down the streets of Montreal without being recognized and stopped by fans who nearly treated him as a god. It was René who, without a shadow of a doubt, gave sportscasting its present status in Québec. He created, single-handedly, the French hockey language and set the first rules of excellence which are still observed by those who have followed him.
