Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
Play-by-play legend Rene Lecavalier was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984 along with fellow broadcasting pioneers Hewitt, Gallivan and Cusick. Offered here are the French-language great's blazer and glass panel from the HHOF when it moved into its new home in downtown Toronto in 1993. The navy blazer, which we estimate is a size 36 or 38, has a patch on the left breast which indicates that Lecavalier was still an "honoured member", a designation no longer accorded to broadcasters, who now receive the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. The dual glass panel presented to Lecavalier measures 12x12 with a clear pane above another of frosted glass. Lecavalier's name appears along the top along with the modern HHOF logo and a bio identifying Rene as "The dean of French-speaking hockey announcers". Both pieces are clean and well-preserved. On several occasions, Lecavalier won the Radiomonde Trophy, awarded to radio’s most popular broadcaster. Then came television and the start of a new career for René, a sports career this time. As the first commentator for the French language versison of “Hockey Night in Canada,” he quickly became so famous that he could hardly walk down the streets of Montreal without being recognized and stopped by fans who nearly treated him as a god. It was René who, without a shadow of a doubt, gave sportscasting its present status in Québec. He created, single-handedly, the French hockey language and set the first rules of excellence which are still observed by those who have followed him.
