It only stands to reason that The King of Rings would come from the City of Champions. The team physician to two Edmonton sports dynasties, Dr. Gordon Cameron amassed one of the most enviable championship ring collections in the history of pro sports. Dr. Cameron earned a total of 16 championship rings, including Stanley Cup rings for each of the NHL Oilers’ five titles from 1984-90. These magnificent gold and diamonds creations were well-deserved for his efforts in keeping Wayne Gretzky and crew in the best of health, and they were right at home with the Grey Cup championship rings the good doctor earned for tending to the CFL Eskimos. He also earned rings for his work with Team Canada, the Edmonton Drillers soccer team, and Triple-A baseball’s Edmonton Trappers. Classic Auctions is honored to offer these 10 Edmonton championship rings from the personal collection of Dr. Gordon Cameron. Featured are all five of Dr. Cameron’s Oilers rings and five of his Eskimos rings, including the 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 rings from Edmonton’s CFL record of five straight titles as well as his 1987 Eskimos Grey Cup ring.
The Edmonton Oilers' fifth Stanley Cup ring from 1989-90 commemorates the crowning achievement of this remarkable NHL dynasty. Magnificent gold and diamond creation presented to Oilers team doctor Gordon Cameron recalls how a group of young veterans, who had in past years supported scoring leader Wayne Gretzky as he led the team to four Cup triumphs, were able to reach the pinnacle of the hockey world without his help. Mark Messier, who will go down in hockey history as one of the greatest leaders of all time, forged his reputation during the Oilers' unforgettable championship run in the spring of 1990. After a 90-point regular season, the Oilers first had to come through with three straight wins to overcome a 3-1 series deficit and beat the Jets in a seven-game opening round series. A satisfying sweep of Gretz and the Kings followed and a six-game win over the Black Hawks put Edmonton in the Cup final for the sixth time in eight years. A triple overtime win in game one in Boston in the longest game in Cup finals history paved the way for a 4-games-to-1 win, Craig Simpson's second period goal proving to be the Cup-winner in Edmonton's 4-1 clinching victory at Boston Garden. Goaltender Bill Ranford's playoff heroics earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy and Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Kevin Lowe, Charlie Huddy and Randy Gregg joined Messier in winning their fifth Stanley Cup rings as members of the Oilers.
Five large diamonds, each approximately 33-point, are surrounded by 16 smaller ones on the face of this gorgeous creation, with the year and "Stanley Cup Champions" encircling them in raised gold on the bezel. The Oilers logo sits in the middle of the left shank with "Cameron" above it, all in raised gold, along with a banner stamped "Doctor" at the bottom. The right shank displays "5 Stanley Cup Championships" across the top with an image of Lord Stanley's silverware on the right, the 1990 final's result in the middle, and a motivational carrot on the left with each of the Oilers' five Cup championship years on it. Incredible ring weighs about 32 grams and "Jostens 10K" is stamped inside the size 12 1/4 band. Beautifully preserved, with most of its obviously proud wear showing in light scratches and scuffs on the back of the band, this ultimate championship ring from the Edmonton Oilers' Stanley Cup dynasty comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the family.
