It only stands to reason that The King of Rings would come from the City of Champions. The team physician to two Edmonton sports dynasties, Dr. Gordon Cameron amassed one of the most enviable championship ring collections in the history of pro sports. Dr. Cameron earned a total of 16 championship rings, including Stanley Cup rings for each of the NHL Oilers’ five titles from 1984-90. These magnificent gold and diamonds creations were well-deserved for his efforts in keeping Wayne Gretzky and crew in the best of health, and they were right at home with the Grey Cup championship rings the good doctor earned for tending to the CFL Eskimos. He also earned rings for his work with Team Canada, the Edmonton Drillers soccer team, and Triple-A baseball’s Edmonton Trappers. Classic Auctions is honored to offer these 10 Edmonton championship rings from the personal collection of Dr. Gordon Cameron. Featured are all five of Dr. Cameron’s Oilers rings and five of his Eskimos rings, including the 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 rings from Edmonton’s CFL record of five straight titles as well as his 1987 Eskimos Grey Cup ring.
The three big diamonds on the tableau of this stunning 1986-87 Stanley Cup championship ring symbolize the Edmonton Oilers' third title in four years. The Oilers returned to the winner's circle to drink from Lord Stanley's bowl in the spring of 1987, one year after their dynasty-in-the-works was interrupted by a heartbreaking second-round playoff loss to arch-rival Calgary. This spectacular 10K gold and diamond creation was presented to Gordon Cameron, the Oilers' team doctor. After a regular season that saw Gretzky, Kurri and Messier finish 1-2-4 in the scoring race, the Oilers beat Los Angeles (4-1), Winnipeg (4-0) and Detroit (4-1) to set up a showdown with Philadelphia in the Cup finals. After taking 2-0 and 3-1 series leads, the Oilers saw the Flyers tie up things and force a seventh and deciding game thanks to a pair of one-goal victories. In the first game seven in the Cup finals since 1971 (Montreal-Chicago), Edmonton came through with a 3-1 win, once again sending fans at Northlands Coliseum into hysterics. Jari Kurri's goal with five minutes left in the second period was the Cup-winner and another Stanley Cup celebration soon followed.
The jubilation of that third Stanley Cup championship is represented in this jeweled work of art. A trio of large 30-point diamonds is surrounded by 16 smaller diamonds set in the tableau. The bezel reads "1987 Stanley Cup Champions" in raised gold. The enameled logo of the Edmonton Oilers is prominently featured on the right shank with "Cameron" in raised gold above it and "Doctor" on a banner at the bottom. The left shank displays "Oilers" in raised gold with the team's three championship years engraved onto three raised Cups, with the motivational image of a carrot at the bottom. The Balfour hallmark and "10K" are stamped inside the band of this size 12 1/4 ring, which weighs approximately 32 grams. Beautifully preserved with some obviously proud wear to report in the form of light scratches and scuffs to the outer edges of the band, a nick on the left side of the right shank, and a ding to the left side of the banner and the D in "Doctor" at the bottom. This amazing championship ring from the height of the Edmonton Oilers' Stanley Cup dynasty comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the family.
