It only stands to reason that The King of Rings would come from the City of Champions. The team physician to two Edmonton sports dynasties, Dr. Gordon Cameron amassed one of the most enviable championship ring collections in the history of pro sports. Dr. Cameron earned a total of 16 championship rings, including Stanley Cup rings for each of the NHL Oilers’ five titles from 1984-90. These magnificent gold and diamonds creations were well-deserved for his efforts in keeping Wayne Gretzky and crew in the best of health, and they were right at home with the Grey Cup championship rings the good doctor earned for tending to the CFL Eskimos. He also earned rings for his work with Team Canada, the Edmonton Drillers soccer team, and Triple-A baseball’s Edmonton Trappers. Classic Auctions is honored to offer these 10 Edmonton championship rings from the personal collection of Dr. Gordon Cameron. Featured are all five of Dr. Cameron’s Oilers rings and five of his Eskimos rings, including the 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 rings from Edmonton’s CFL record of five straight titles as well as his 1987 Eskimos Grey Cup ring.
This stunning 1984-85 Stanley Cup championship gold and diamond ring was presented to Gordon Cameron, the Edmonton Oilers' team doctor. This dazzler commemorating the Oilers' second straight Cup triumph in the spring of 1985 features an inner ring of 16 diamonds, each approximately 0.5-point, surrounding a big cubic zirconia set in the middle of the tableau, with an outer ring of 33 small cubic zirconias. The reigning Cup-champion Oilers posted a 49-win, 109-point regular season. Wayne Gretzky won his fifth consecutive scoring title, surpassing the 200-point plateau for the third time while helping Jari Kurri to also reach the 70-goal mark. Edmonton scored 401 goals altogether and come playoff time, roared to the Cup finals in just two games over the minimum. A three-game sweep of the Kings in the opening round was followed by a four-game sweep of the Jets and a 4-2 series win over the Black Hawks in the conference finals. The Oilers then disposed of the Flyers in five games, Paul Coffey scoring what proved to be the Cup-winner in Edmonton's clinching 8-3 victory in front of hometown fans. Hockey's most exciting team featured several record-breakers as Gretzky's 30 assists and 47 points were new marks for one playoff year, while Coffey shattered records for goals (12), assists (25) and points by a defenseman. Kurri's 19 goals and Grant Fuhr's 15 wins meanwhile, tied playoff records.
A sloping "Stanley Cup Champions" on the bezel surrounds the shimmering tableau of this shocking piece. The right shank features "Dr. Cameron" along with an Oilers logo in raised gold and "1985" stamped on a banner at the bottom. The left shank displays the team's name in raised gold above a pair of Stanley Cups with "84" and "85" inscribed on them, respectively, and a motivational carrot at the bottom. "14K" is stamped inside the size 12 band of this superb creation which weighs approximately 32 grams. Beautifully preserved with light wear that includes scratches and scuffs on the outer edges of the band that are not readily apparent. The ultimate memento of one of the Oilers' biggest steps towards establishing their Stanley Cup dynasty of the 1980s, this historic ring comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the family.
