It only stands to reason that The King of Rings would come from the City of Champions. The team physician to two Edmonton sports dynasties, Dr. Gordon Cameron amassed one of the most enviable championship ring collections in the history of pro sports. Dr. Cameron earned a total of 16 championship rings, including Stanley Cup rings for each of the NHL Oilers’ five titles from 1984-90. These magnificent gold and diamonds creations were well-deserved for his efforts in keeping Wayne Gretzky and crew in the best of health, and they were right at home with the Grey Cup championship rings the good doctor earned for tending to the CFL Eskimos. He also earned rings for his work with Team Canada, the Edmonton Drillers soccer team, and Triple-A baseball’s Edmonton Trappers. Classic Auctions is honored to offer these 10 Edmonton championship rings from the personal collection of Dr. Gordon Cameron. Featured are all five of Dr. Cameron’s Oilers rings and five of his Eskimos rings, including the 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 rings from Edmonton’s CFL record of five straight titles as well as his 1987 Eskimos Grey Cup ring.
Brilliant gold championship creation here conjures up images of a young Edmonton Oilers team coming of age and of Wayne Gretzky raising the Stanley Cup over his head for the very first time. Wayne and buddy Mark Messier beaming exuberantly is a picture etched into the memory of Oiler and hockey fans alike. The date was May 19, 1984 and Edmonton's Northlands Coliseum the place as the Oilers ended the Islanders' Stanley Cup reign with a 5-2 win in game five of the finals, Ken Linseman's early second period goal turning out to be the Cup winner. Edmonton had reached the finals by first sweeping Winnipeg, edging arch-rival Calgary in seven games and wiping out Minnesota in four straight. All this after an amazing record-pulverizing regular season which saw Wayne and friends score a (still) all-time record of 446 goals while winning 57 games and racking up 119 points. Paul Coffey finished runner-up to Gretzky in the scoring race, with Jari Kurri also finishing in the top ten of league scorers and Messier also reaching the 100-point plateau. Man, what a team with the brightest of futures!
Members of Edmonton's first Stanley Cup team received golden mementos to mark the joyous occasion, with this one crafted for Gordon Cameron, the Oilers' team doctor. The tableau features a large cubic zirconia, approximately 45-point sitting in a diamond-shaped gold setting in the middle of a blue stone. The team's name is spelled out in raised gold on the upper and lower bezels, with "19" and "84" stamped on either side of the bezel. The right shank includes the Oilers logo with "Cameron" above and a motivational carrot below. The left shank displays an image of Lord Stanley's precious trophy, the results of Edmonton's four playoff series victories, and the words Edmontonians never got tired of hearing in subsequent years; "Stanley Cup Champions." The interior of the size 12-1/2 band is stamped "14K" and the ring weighs approximately 32 grams. It was obviously worn with pride as evidenced by light scratches and scuffs on the shanks, bezel and back of the band, which also has a couple of tiny dings, as well as black coating that has worn off the "L" and "E" of the Oilers logo on the right shank. This historic keepsake, commemorating Edmonton's first Stanley Cup title, comes with a signed letter of authenticity from the family.
