Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2012
Canada was reeling and stinging from its humiliating loss to the U.S.S.R. in the opening game of the 1972 Summit Series when the country's team of NHL all-stars took to the ice for Game 2 at Maple Leaf Gardens. Wayne Cashman was inserted into the lineup and the move paid early dividends when Cash set up Phil Esposito for the game's opening tally in Team Canada's 4-1 win on September 4. Offered is one of the very rare original "Player of the Game" 14K gold rings presented during the 1972 Summit Series, this one awarded to Wayne for his efforts in Game 2. The tableau of the gold bauble displays the Canadian and Soviet flags on crossed hockey sticks with "Canada" and "USSR" on the respective blades and "1972" stamped on the bottom. "14K" is stamped inside the band of the size 10 ring which displays light surface marks and scratches from obviously proud wear. A seldom-seen and gorgeous memento from the 1972 Summit Series, this magnificent and historic ring comes with Wayne Cashman's signed LOA.
