Two Universiade gold medals won by Tamara Press are featured in this lot of four medals from the Soviet legend's personal collection. The 3-time Olympic champion won gold in both the discus and shot put in the 1961 Universiade in Bulgaria and she completed the same sweep 2 years later in Brazil. Offered here are 2 of those gold medals, one from Sofia in 1961 and the other from Porto Alegre in 1963, though it is unclear for which of the 2 events in both cases. Also included are a 1960 Rome Olympics commemorative medal and a medal from the Kiev 1965 USSR-USA track meet. The 1961 Universiade gold medal is roughly 2” in diameter with “FISU, Sofia Universiade 1961” on the reverse;
The “Universiade Brasil 1963” gold medal is a shade under 2 3/4" in diameter;
Gold-colored 1960 Olympic commemorative medal is 2 1/8” in diameters with “Cor Magis Tibi Sena Pandit” spelled out in Latin on the reverse;
Russian-language engraving on the silver-colored Kiev 1965 medal has Press’ last name and “56.76”, he winning discus throw distance in meters.
Tamara Press will donate a substantial portion of her proceeds from this auction to her Moscow-based “Physical Education and Health” charitable foundation, which facilitates material and emotional support for sporting veterans and also provides help to orphanages and similar children’s institutions.
