Olympic great Tamara Press dominated international women's shot put and discus competition throughout the first half of the 1960s. Offered here from the Soviet legend's personal collection are a pair of Amateur Athletic Union gold medals Press won while competing in the United States, including one from the 1962 USSR-USA meet at Stanford University in California. Press won both the discus and shot put at the competition so it is unclear which of the two events is represented by this 2 3/8" diameter gold medal. Also included is a 1965 AAU shot put gold medal won by Press which measures 1 3/4" in diameter.
Tamara Press will donate a substantial portion of her proceeds from this auction to her Moscow-based “Physical Education and Health” charitable foundation, which facilitates material and emotional support for sporting veterans and also provides help to orphanages and similar children’s institutions.
