Amazing piece is this Olympic relay torch from the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. This is the actual torch with which relay runner Anton Andreev carried the sacred Olympic flame over his stretch of the route from Olympia in Greece to the lighting of the Olympic cauldron on July 19 by Soviet basketball gold medalist Sergei Belov at Central Lenin Stadium. The torch, which is 22" long, was fuelled by its now-empty gas canister that remains within the removable handle. The number "5996" is engraved on the top of the gold-colored bowl, which displays burn marks from the Olympic flame. The 1980 Moscow Olympic logo is displayed in red on the gold-colored protective screen at the top of the handle. "Moscow - Olympiad - 1980" printed in red letters on the upper part of the torch has a few scratches to the Russian text. An incredibly rare opportunity! The torch displays scratches throughout from its clearly proud display. It originally weighed 700 grams when its fuel canister was full, and now weighs about 600 grams (1.5 lbs.) with its empty canister. The lip of the bowl is 3 3/4” in diameter at its widest.
Also included are the white and red “Moscow Olympiad 1980” headband Andreev wore while carrying the torch, and a 2005 Russian newspaper article about his part in the Moscow Olympic torch relay.
