Amazing and incredibly rare opportunity is this 1988 Olympic gold medal won by the Soviet Union's Gennadiy Avdeenko in the high jump competition in Seoul. The world champion in 1983 in Helsinki, Avdeenko set an Olympic record in South Korea as he claimed the gold by tying his personal best of 2.38 meters, which he had reached one year earlier on his way to silver at the world championships in Rome. The 6-foot-6 Ukrainian beat out American Hollis Conway, who claimed Olympic silver, and fellow Soviet Rudolf Povarnitsyn and Swedish great Patrik Sjoberg, who shared bronze. The spectacular and substantial Olympic gold medal features "XXIV Olympiad Seoul 1988" in relief on the obverse alongside Giuseppe Cassioli's traditional Trionfo design. A dove carrying an olive branch in its beak is displayed on the reverse below the Seoul 1988 logo. "Athletics Men High Jump" is stamped on the bottom edge of the gold medal, which comes with its blue, red, orange and white ribbon. The medal sits in the blue velour setting inside its original presentation box with "Games of the XXIVth Olympiad Seoul 1988" in gold letters on the satiny white fabric inside the lid. The gold medal remains in gorgeous condition, very clean overall with expected handling on the edges. Also included are Avdeenko's Olympic champion's diploma, which measures 13 3/4" x 12" and comes in its 14" x 12 1/2" presentation sleeve, his Seoul 1988 competitor's bib (8x10 ), and his laminated Olympic athlete's ID pass (5 1/2" x 3 1/2"). Gennadiy Avdeenko's signed letter of authenticity accompanies this incredible collection featuring his 1998 Olympic gold medal. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve.
