Historical Hockey Memorabilia Spring 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2012
The U.S.S.R. staked its place in Olympic history in 1956 by claiming its first gold medal. Offered here are game-worn and memorabilia items from early Russian hockey great Viktor Shuvalov. The Soviets swept to their first Olympic gold medal in Cortina D'Ampezzo, outscoring their opponents 25-5 in the 5-game final round. As per Shuvalov, the skate sharpener is the one used by the "CCCP" team at the 1956 Olympics. The shin guards with customized metal pads are the ones Shuvalov wore in Cortina and the padded leather helmet was worn by teammate Nikolai Sologubov. Shuvalov's well-worn white gloves are a later vintage. Also included is the Olympic program for February 3, when the Soviets beat the U.S. to secure the gold. Comes with Viktor Shuvalov's individual LOAs for the skate sharpener, helmet, and gloves, respectively. Rounding out the lot are a Cortina area map and pamphlet and souvenir Olympic stamps.
