It took a "Miracle" in Lake Placid for the Soviet Union to be relegated to Olympic silver in 1980. Offered here is the 1980 Olympic silver medal for ice hockey presented to defenseman Sergei Starikov, who went on to win Olympic gold in Sarajevo (1984) and Calgary (1988) before becoming one of the first Soviets to play in the NHL with New Jersey alongside HOFer Slava Fetisov. A stunning upset loss to the United States at Lake Placid ultimately interrupted the Russians' run of four straight gold medals for the U.S.S.R., leaving them to settle for silver. One side of this precious Olympic medal has "Ice Hockey" engraved below "Lake Placid 1980", which appears in relief along with the official Lake Placid Olympic logo and pine cones and branches. The other side of this 3.25-inch-diameter medal features "XIII Olympic Winter Games" and the Olympic rings with a hand holding a flaming torch aloft with a mountain range in the background. The edge is stamped "Tiffany & Co, Sterling Silver" and dated "1979". Most of the medal's silver finish has worn off other than what was protected from the areas within relief that were spared from repeated cleaning. The medal is complete with its original light blue-and-white ribbon, which displays nicely despites some stains/soiling. This Olympic silver medal remains a very presentable piece that certainly has its place in international hockey history. Also included is Starikov's official Olympic diploma signed by IOC president Lord Killanin. This remarkable and rarely-seen Olympic document measures 13 3/4" x 11 3/4". It comes in its original 14 1/2" x 12 1/2" sleeve with a gold-colored 1980 Lake Placid Olympic logo on the cover that has a number of small marks throughout. Sergei Starikov's signed letter of authenticity accompanies this amazing Lake Placid 1980 Olympic lot.
