Historical Hockey Memorabilia Spring 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2012
Amazing finds here bring forth the story of the hustling, bustling early-20th century activity in the copper-mining town of Houghton, Michigan, and for us hockey heads, of the Houghton Amphidrome and its tenants, the Portage Lake Hockey Team. Skating in one of the first professional leagues, the Portage Lake Squad is depicted here in a miniature postcard-like album and heralded as 1906 International League Champions. Fred "Cyclone" Taylor is pictured in the lower left of the 3" by 3-3/4" photo collage, one of 24 included in an accordion-style ensemble, with one "flap" detached and others partially split. Other Hall-of-Famers are Bruce Stuart, Riley Hern and Joe Hall - what a lineup! Meanwhile, a curved copper shield with an image of the famous Amphidrome - imagine the hockey greats who competed there - is applied to the back of a bear figurine which measures approximately 2" by 3-1/2". From pro hockey's infancy!
