After the excitement this important card garnered in our last auction, we searched high and low to uncover another similarly-scarce example. This astonishing early tobacco card features the image of the presenter of the Stanley Cup, Frederick Arthur Stanley. This one, only the second example we have ever offered, was produced by Allen & Ginter and dates to an 1889 issuing, making it the true Lord Stanley "rookie" card. What makes the piece even that much more special is that he is listed in the set as Governor General of Canada. So many more-common Stanley ephemera items date to his time on English soil. This example is very rare, but does have slight paper loss and glue residue on the back from having been affixed at one time in an album. Although ungraded, it has a pleasant, crease-free appearance when viewed from the front and one might expect a very good to excellent grading. However, paper loss on the verso from where it was once affixed to an album will certainly drop the grade. Still, an extremely interesting and significant card for hockey collectors.
