In game two of the 1928 Stanley Cup Finals, 45-year-old New York Rangers coach Lester Patrick replaced injured Lorne Chabot in goal in a story that has become a legend. Patrick and the Rangers were able to win that game 2-1 in overtime, but the Rangers promptly signed New York Americans goaltender Joe Miller the next day. In just their second NHL season, the Rangers captured the Stanley Cup, becoming only the second American team to win the prize. This classic cardigan sweater was worn by Rangers defenseman Leo Bourgault throughout the Championship season. Bourgault, from Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, played five seasons with New York and played in over 300 NHL games in his career. The sweater, issued to each player and staff member of the team, sports a great chenille team crest and wonderful red and cream wool pockets on a blue body. The coarse wool cardigan measures about 20" across the chest, indicating a size 40. It has been well-preserved and exhibits a few light snags on the left shoulder and some light staining. Two of the six buttons are missing but the remaining four are solid and hold everything together nicely. Included is a photograph picturing Leo wearing this exact cardigan! From the estate of Leo Bourgault, this smashing sweater will come with a letter of authenticity from the family.
