Historical Hockey Memorabilia Spring 2012

This milky white durene is a fantastic piece of Penguins history. Originally from the set first worn in the 1969-70 playoffs against Oakland and St. Louis, this particular jersey did not see game action until the following year, in 1970-71, when the number (25) was worn by both Robin Burns (10 games played) and John Stewart (15 games played). Stick markings adorn the sleeves and there appears to be a washed out blood stain on the belly, right below the crest. Another solid black stick mark turns up down low on the front hem. A peek inside reveals significant interior pilling, especially in behind the elbows. While the jersey appears to be well-worn, it does still have an excellent shine to the durene. Original unrestored crest, neck tagging and neck lace remain on this 40+ year old relic made by the Wilson sporting goods company. The dual-layer sewn-on tackle twill numbering is all original and repairs and stitch outlines just above on the back are evidence that the jersey once had a TV nameplate(s) at one point. Reinforced elbows, but no fight strap in this one. The weight and feel of the mercerized cotton/durene material in your hands is unlike anything from the modern era. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. This is the "circle crest" style of jersey that inspired the Pens 2008 Winter Classic throwback jerseys which were so popular among fans that the Pens kept wearing it as an alternate for the following 3 seasons. These jerseys are quite rare and nicely preserved examples like this one don't trade hands too often.
