Historical Hockey Memorabilia Spring 2012
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/12/2012
Hockey historians and printed document collectors will be fascinated by this lot of original correspondence from the family of the legendary Art Ross. Included are two letters signed by Ross's wife, Muriel, on her personal letterhead with their postmarked envelopes. Excerpt from Mrs. Ross's April 5, 1948 letter to her nieces refers to Art Ross's dismay at the gambling scandal which saw Boston's Don Gallinger banished from the NHL: "Hockey has been his life, and he simply would not believe anyone could stoop to such depths, on his team, or any other, for that matter. But hockey will survive in spite of one or two rats." A two-page thank you note to "Uncle Arthur" mentions "The Gallinger Nightmare". A May 4, 1952 Boston postmark is on the envelope of Mrs. Ross's other signed letter to her nieces. An envelope postmarked Feb. 16, 1934 addressed to Ross's niece comes with a letter about the Bruins' tribute for Lionel Hitchman, which includes a pair of "Hitchman Night" circulars and a pre-printed return envelope. Also included are a January 1940 fan letter to Eddie Shore from the same household, a pair of Madison Square Garden ticket envelopes left by Ross in March 1934 and a vintage Boston Garden ticket envelope.
