From the dawning of an illustrious professional career comes this revealing official NHL document signed by the incomparable Jacques Plante, not long after he had played his first three games with the Montreal Canadiens. The toque-wearing goaltender, then playing for the Montreal Royals in the Quebec Senior Hockey League, had first signed a three-game amateur tryout contract with the Habs and replaced the injured Gerry McNeil three times in early November, 1952, going undefeated with two wins and a tie. This standard two-sided, one page NHL contract was inked December 29, 1952 and called for Plante to be paid $125 per game(!) with the Canadiens for the 1952-53 and '53-54 seasons, as well as $3,000 to perform with the AHL Buffalo Bisons from that point until the end of the season. Final clause of interest in the contract reads: "If Jacques Plante plays minor league hockey in 1953/54 his salary will be decided on at training camp in 1953." The bold fountain pen signatures of Frank Selke and Plante are in the appropriate places on the back of the contract, with that of league president Clarence Campbell gracing the front. Fascinating from the start was the career of the legendary Jacques Plante!
